Mental Health Awareness

“Sadly, too often, the stigma around mental health prevents people who need help from seeking it. But that simply doesn’t make any sense. Whether an illness affects your heart, your arm or your brain, it’s still an illness, and there shouldn’t be any distinction…we should make it clear that getting help isn’t a sign of weakness — it’s a sign of strength — and we should ensure that people can get the treatment they need.” -Michelle Obama

The month of May doesn’t just have of us thinking about blossoming flowers and springtime weather. May is mental health awareness month. It’s a time to acknowledge the impact of mental illness and individuals, like Bee Boisseau, who are aren’t taking it lightly. Due to his passion as an artist intent on removing stigmas related to this traditionally taboo topic, September Set is honored to highlight Bee Boisseau.

As a talented artist, music producer, and musician, Bee Boisseau has made it his personal mission to make mental health awareness a priority. Candid about his own experiences that include anxiety and depression, Bee Boisseau talks about vulnerability being the norm for artists as a result of being exposed to the ongoing opinion of others. Given his personal experiences, Bee Boisseau has discovered that management of vulnerability impacts mental health which has led him to address mental health like physical health to ensure wellness. Mental health freed him from judgement when being himself. He speaks about how the larger issue of stigma is related because it poses major challenges to healing. Bee Biosseau states that “emotions are an alarm system. There’s an action required when the alarm is charged”. He uses this to measure this own emotions as a way to relate to others. “Communication is the key”, says Bee Boisseau.

Developing the Bee Boisseau Corporporation, non-profit organization, has provided a vehicle to remove the negative stigma surrounding mental illness through entertaining & educational programming, to provide affordable fine arts education to underprivileged and minority youth, and to nurture and develop the next generation of arts industry professionals. Thanks to Bee Boisseau many who have traditionally suffered in silence may no longer feel alone and isolated. He is intent on using his voice and art to bring comfort and awareness.
